Empowering rangatahi to strengthen their identity, their belief in themselves, and the people around them.

Who we are

ELTA is a youth organisation providing ongoing therapeutic support, guidance, connection, life-skills development and capability-building for rangatahi, including early intervention, using experiential learning and adventure therapy as our methods of delivery. We run programmes year-round, and rangatahi can return for further programmes as needed for continued support.

Our kaupapa

Our core kaupapa is to empower and support rangatahi/taiohi to strengthen their sense of identity, including their cultural identity, through connection with self, others and te taiao, the natural world. We also support their belief in themselves, so they can thrive, lead fulfilling lives and strengthen those around them.

How we work

We use adventure and the outdoors, through intentional programme design and skilled facilitation, as the vehicle for personal, social and community development. Our approach is strengths-based in everything we do. We believe all rangatahi are resourceful and resilient, and our role is to support and inspire them to see the strengths they bring to the world.

What rangatahi gain

Through our programmes, rangatahi build teamwork, communication, decision-making and leadership skills, along with confidence, resilience and a clearer sense of their own values and identity. This supports holistic wellbeing across te whare tapa whā:

  • Taha tinana: physical
  • Taha hinengaro: mental and emotional
  • Taha whānau: social
  • Taha wairua: spiritual

Our partners

Our programmes are delivered by qualified youth practitioners trained in experiential and adventure-based practice, in partnership with youth and disability organisations across Auckland. These partnerships help connect rangatahi and their whānau to further support beyond our programmes.

Our Challenge Course

ELTA owns and manages the ELTA Challenge Course at One Big Adventure, Henderson Valley. It is one of the settings where our programmes take place. It is operated under agreement with three accredited providers, all focused on youth development.
